Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE)

The Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) collects data about first-time, first-year students’ academic and co-curricular experiences in high school and their expectations for college. The BCSSE survey is administered every three years during the summer prior to their arrival.Current and previous BCSSE survey instruments are located at http://bcsse.iub.edu/survey_instruments.cfm.

Online Survey Results

Survey results can be generated at the university level, college/school level, and program level. Results can be filtered by gender (self reported), ethnicity (self reported), first generation (self reported). To protect student anonymity, survey results with less than three respondents will not be accessible.

Advising Sheets

The Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement Student Advising Report is an individualized report for students and is designed to help advisors understand how student expectations about college activities and learning might affect their actual first-year experiences.

The Overall 2017 BCSSE Advising Report provides an overview of student characteristics, their high school experiences, and their expectations about first-year experiences for the freshman class.The overall report is intended to provide a reference for advisors when using individualized report.

The advising reports are for all first-time freshman students who responded to the 2017 BCSSE survey.
